Shopping on Foyles

When William and Gilbert Foyle began selling books in 1903, they specialized only in educational texts. Their choice was more accidental than planned, as both had failed their civil service exams and were left with a pile of unused books. They seized this opportunity to recover some of their expenses and placed an advertisement. The response was overwhelmingly positive, prompting them to buy additional books to sell for a profit. The profits were modest, and by the end of the year, they netted just ten pounds, yet this didn't stop the Foyles from opening their first bookstore, proudly calling themselves 'the largest educational booksellers in London.'

Foyles' emphasis on educational books has long since changed. With a wider selection of titles and the relocation to larger premises on Charing Cross Road, a new motto emerged: Foyles became known as 'the world's greatest bookshop'. Shop at Foyles for your favorite children's books or visit the fiction section for the latest English novels. If you’re at the Charing Cross Road store, venture to the fourth floor for the complete catalog of Grant and Cutler, the UK's largest foreign language retailer, which joined with Foyles in 2011. Take advantage of our Foyles discount codes for significant savings on your next book purchase.

Additionally, you can purchase all your stationery from the site and even obtain a gift card if you're unsure what to get someone but want them to receive a book from you. Just remember, our Foyles vouchers will make your shopping experience lighter on your wallet, thus more enjoyable!

About Foyles

Ask a Londoner about books and chances are they'll envision one particular spot: Foyles' bookshop on Charing Cross Road. Once the heart of the capital's book trade, Charing Cross Road became so known for its new and second-hand bookstores that its fame even reached Hollywood in the beloved film 84 Charing Cross Road, featuring the legendary duo of Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft (and of course, Judi Dench!). By the time the movie was made in the late 1980s, many bookstores in the Charing Cross Road-Shaftesbury Avenue area were closing due to rising rent costs, yet Foyles continued to thrive at its iconic address, 119 Charing Cross Road, having relocated there back in 1929.

In fact, Foyles has been part of the book industry since 1904, when brothers Gilbert and William Foyle opened their first bookshop in Cecil Court, near Leicester Square tube station. Remaining within the Foyle family for over a century, Foyles became a well-known name in the industry, with multiple branches established across the city at different times. However, Foyles remained a London-centric operation until well into the 21st century. The first Foyles location to open outside London was the Bristol store in 2011, followed by the New Street shop in Birmingham. In 2014, Foyles moved two buildings down the road, preserving its legendary spot on Charing Cross Road but transitioning to a more spacious location. The new flagship store accommodates 200,000 books and features over four miles of shelving! Since 2018, Foyles has been part of the Waterstones group, but all seven branches keep their distinct identity, especially the Charing Cross Road store. Whatever you seek, you can be sure you will find it at Foyles, and with our Foyles vouchers, you’ll save money too!
